Abstract: The current technological progress in the process industry results in a significant increase of the complexity of control systems. The amount of supervised information grows constantly for each operator because of a higher level of automation and an optimized information acquisition of the control systems. The simultaneous decrease in the number of operators intensifies these problems. This development results in a cognitive overload of the operator which causes incorrect behavior and responses in alert situations. In technical literature, several approaches are discussed to counteract this problem. This paper describes a new way to consider the cognitive abilities of human operators on the one hand, and on the other hand it shows how to reduce the complexity of the visualization engineering process.
